Tonight Tim Wakefield begins his quest for 2,000 strikeouts and 200 wins.
Wake hasn't faired all that well against the Angels, posting a 4.80 ERA and 9-12 record in 23 career starts. Last year he faced the Halos only once, in Anaheim, and allowed 4 runs on 6 hits (2 homers) over 7 innings of work. The Sox lost that game 5-3.
But this is a new Angels team... Mark Teixeira is gone, Vladdy and Hunter are a year older and Bobby Abreu is in the outfield. These Angels just dropped two of three to the up-start Oakland Athletics and they're still waiting for John Lackey, Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar to return from injury.
Therefore, Jered Weaver will get the start tonight, he of the .297 BAA and 5.35 ERA against Boston... and the flowing blond locks.
Bottom Line: The Red Sox aren't happy about dropping two games to the Rays in Fenway this week... look for them to take out their frustrations on Weaver.
Notes: Youk is red hot right now and is bating .294 with two homers agains Weaver... Ortiz has also taken Weaver deep twice and is hitting .467... Torri Hunter loves facing Wake: 14 for 37 (.378), 3 HR, 8 RBI... and so does Vladimir Guererro: 8 for 19 (.421), 5 HR, 8 RBI, 8 BB.
