Jed Lowrie met with Dr. Donald Sheridan in Arizona this weekend to get another opinion from the specialist and manager Terry Francona said the shortstop is likely to have surgery on his left wrist in the next few days. Two procedures had been considered by Lowrie, one that would cost him the season and one that could bring him back by July.

"We're still having some internal discussions," Francona said. "In saying that, I think it's generally pretty good news. I think the medical people even think with the surgery that he would be having he could be playing by the All-Star break. That's where we're at today."

Surgery seemed more and more inevitable as things played out, but it's nice to hear that Lowrie could be taking some hacks again by July. Julio Lugo, who was hitting in the .300s this spring before injuring his knee, is rehabbing in Pawtucket and could be a big help if he can bounce back and continue to hit. But Nick Green has filled in admirably at short stop. After a red hot spring that earned him a spot on the roster, Green has cooled off in April, but he's made some key defensive plays and is hitting a modest .240 at the bottom of the order.

Bottom Line: Getting Lowrie healthy for the future should be the priority here. If it means he misses a few months and isn't 100% until 2010... I can live with Lugo and Green in the meantime... Lowrie's absence certainly didn't slow the Sox down this weekend.
