Centerfield summized a phone interview between WEEI and Jed Lowrie earlier today.
Bottom Line: Lowrie has chosen to get cortisone shots and hold off on surgery... for now. After yesterday's game in Oakland, Terry Francona said that Lowrie was experiencing positive results from teh first shot, but he will remain on the DL for a few weeks while he rests and rehabs the wrist.
Lowrie met with Dr. Thomas Graham, a Baltimore hand specialist, earlier this week and they came up with three possible scenarios:
1. Cortisone didn't work at all, and surgery is needed.
2. Cortisone is a short-term fix, that it feels good for a little while like it did this offseason through spring training, and then the surgery is needed when that's done.
3. Cortisone works, and is a long-term solution.
I'll be hoping for No. 3... but Lowrie is half the player he can be when the wrist is ailing him. If the pain comes back again later this season, it may be best to shut him down and get it fixed. I'd rather see him get healthy now and be ready to step in in 2010 for the long haul.

With Dice-K on the DL and Clay Buchholz nursing a pulled hammy (and getting married) it looks like Justin Masterson will earn a start sometime next week. Firebrand of the AL looked at the gap Masterson's move from the bullpen will make, but when all is said and done, it will help more than it hurts.
Mastey was insanely dominant agains the A's and I expect him to be nasty again. Meanwhile, Wake enabled the bullpen to take a game off and we're plenty deep out there anyway, so I don't see why Paps, Okie, Ram Ram and MDC can't hold it down while Masterson is starting games.
But I will say this... The Orioles aren't F-ing around right now. The offense is on fire, lead by Roberts, Markakis and Jones... I don't expect our starters be throwing up goose eggs all weekend, so the offense better keep things rolling through this series.
