That's really all I can say about last night's 9-8 loss to the Tribe. With the Red Sox riding an 11-game winning streak and Anthony "I like to keep things interesting" Reyes on the mound, you knew it was going to take some dirty black magic for the Sox to lose this one.
Enter Javier Lopez.
With the score locked at 8-8 in the 9th, Lopez managed to strikeout Grady Sizemore for the second out of the inning. Then, he gets two strikes on the red-hot Asdrubal Cabrera and forces him to chop a gorunder to first...
Youkilis make a Gold Glove back-handed play and gives Lopez a perfect toss to end the inning... and Lopez drops it.
Mark DeRosa scores and the steak is snappped.
At this point, I see Youkilis staring off into space with his cap flipped half off his head, trying to comprehend how the play was miffed and if Lopez will fit on his pig roast spit.
Youk said all the right things after the game, but make no mistake, Lopez should be put into witness protection ASAP. You don't include Youkilis in your streak-snapping, error-making, game-losing antics... without reprecusions.
"We didn't lose the game on that play," Youkilis said. "There were other opportunities. It's all right. We'll go back out tomorrow and play another game."
"You don't like losing, but we're playing good ball," Youkilis said. "There's too many games to sit around and mope. Just go home, get some rest, and get back at it again tomorrow night."
There's no doubt about that. Lopez isn't the only guy on the hook here... Julio "E6" Lugo made his first error of 2009 and enabled a run to score in the third... Brad Penny stunk it up, allowing 7 runs (4 earned) over 2 2/3 innings - forcing a tired bullpen to pick up the slack... again... and Takashi Saito coughed up the 8-7 lead in the 7th when Mark "2 for his last 25" DeRosa took him deep.
Bottom Line: Black magic. That's the only way to explain this hot mess of a game. But Youk says it's time to move on... so I will.
