JD Drew lead the Red Sox to a sweep of the Blue Jays last night with two ding dongs and a 4 for performance. Jon Lester struggled in the first inning, but settled in and held the Jays to just one run and three hits through eight impressive innings.
With Pedroia back in the lineup and Martinez, Bay and Ortiz all hitting well as of late, Drew found himself in an unfamilar spot in the lineup - eighth. Rather than looking at the move as a demotion, Drew simply went out and had the best game of his 2009 season... and in doing so, gave the Red Sox a huge confidence boost heading into an important series against the Yankees.
"It seems like when one guy gets hot, a lot of guys get hot," Drew said. "The key is to try and keep going as a team, get quality at-bats, getting guys in in key situations."
"We're excited," second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. "They beat up on us pretty good at their place (in a four-game sweep earlier this month). We're going to come out and hopefully play a lot better than we did at their place."
Bottom Line: It's great to see the offense clicking again, but we'll need some pretty amazing pitching from Brad Penny and Junichi Tazawa this weekend if we want to win this upcoming series. If this series turns into a slugfest, I'm still not sure we can win that kind of fight against the Yankees... although we do have an edge being in Fenway and not the Bronx.
More on that later...
