Brad Penny still hasn't completed a 7th inning this season, but the 6 innings he gave the Sox last night we some of the best he's thrown all season.
After looking dismal in his last four starts, Penny allowed 3 runs on 6 scattered hits and managed to keep the ball in the yard. But in typical Penny fashion, he was earased from the decision after leaving after six. Delcarmen coughed up two runs in relief, but the offense actually woke up last night and Nick Green's sac fly in the 7th proved to be the game winner.
Last night's game was a good example of the debate CSN's Gary Tanguay and I are currently in over on the Daily Duel. Penny held the opponent to 3 runs, but unlike most of his starts, the offense actually put some runs on the board and - can you believe it? - the Red Sox won the game.
Tanguay is arguing that the Sox have been doomed by injuries to the staff, but I think the offense is holding us back. You can leave your two cents in the comments section here or you can click over and vote for the guy you think has it right.
Bottom Line: Jason Bay has a ding dong in 2 of his last 3 starts... If we get this guy going again with V-Mart and Youk behind him and Pedroia and Ellsbury in front of him, we won't need to worry about Not-So-Big Papi or that huge hole in the lineup with the flat-top and the goatee...
... or the fact the our rotation has been cut in half buy the injury monster.
