Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Red Sox are considering bringing back Alex Gonzalez to help out at short stop.
The Red Sox sent Julio Lugo packing only to watch him continue to hit in the .300s for the Cardinals, while Jed Lowrie hit the DL. Nick Green has become the everyday short stop, but after hitting .321 in May, he's come back to earth offensively hitting .128 since the break.
Lugo was a defensive liability and Green, a 2B by trade, is still learning on the job... so Gonzo would bring a nice glove to the table... but he's almost an automatic out at the plate. Right now Gonzo is hitting .210... and that includes an 11 for 40 (.275) August.
Bottom Line: Lugo was frustrating in the field and it's pretty clear there's more to the story then we've heard so far... but is Gonzo the answer? Good defense is crucial in the playoffs, so it probably won't hurt to add a guy like Gonoz, but the Sox will have to trade for him and I'll be curious to hear who the Sox offer up to the Reds for him.
Note: Gonzo posted a .985 fielding percentage in 110 starts for the Red Sox in 2006... his highest mark ever.
