It's time to make a change. John Smoltz is no longer an effective starter, but he has shown signs that he could be effective for one inning or even two.
MLB Network's Harold Reynolds told WEEI today that he has known Smoltz for a long time and he think Smoltz would not fight a move to the bullpen... in fact, he thinks Smoltz would want to help the team in anyway he could or walk away all together - rather than be a distraction or a problem.
Since Justin Masterson is now in Cleveland, the Sox need an RP that can help eat innings when guys like Penny and Buchholz fail to get into the 7th inning. Smoltz won't close in Boston, but he could be a nice option out of the pen that would help keep guys the other guys fresh.
Reynolds also noted that Smoltz is not throwing the splitter right now, but a move to the bullpen might prompt Smoltz to mix up his pitch selection and the splitter could make him a more effective reliever.
Bottom Line: Billy Traber (7-5 , 3.32 ERA) probably was the best choice for a call up, but after last night, I don't think he'll be starting games for the Red Sox. If Smoltz goes to the pen before Septemeber (and I hope he does) the Sox could give Michael Bowden or even Junichi Tazawa a start... at leats until Tim Wakefield is ready to come back (supposedly he's 10 days away).
Do you guys think Smoltz can be an effective RP or should he just hang 'em up?
