Weekend Update: The trades you don't make

I was wondering through the Sox blog-o-sphere this morning and came across this post at YFSF:

The Trades You Don't Make*

Pitcher A, since July 31st: 2-2, 4.75 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 36IP, 35H, 18BB, 25K

Pitcher B, since July 31st: 2-4, 4.71 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 42IP, 54H, 5BB, 36K

*(small sample size disclaimer)

I'll let you think about that one for a minute...

...

Okay. If you haven't figured it out yet. Pitcher A is Clay Buchholz and Pitcher B is Roy Halladay.

On August 1st, many of us were calling for Theo's head after learning that Theo apparently refused to include Buchhy in a trade for Halladay. We later learned that JP Ricciardi, never really wanted to trade Doc within the AL East unless he could cripple the other team in the process

So... now that we're a month removed from the dealine and all the inoformation appears to be on the table, it's interesting to see what has transpired.

Halladay seems to have lost his edge, now that he knows he stuck with the Jays for the rest of the season. And Clay has put the trade rumors behind him and become the No.3 we need right now.

"That was a terrific game," Francona said. "I actually think when he establishes his fastball and makes hitters respect that, it makes his changeup that much better and you start adding two breaking balls for strikes, it gives them a lot of different looks."

So Theo looks like a genius... for now. Clay is pitching well and we still have all those prospects to help out in September.

And how about that Paul Byrd guy!?

Bottom Line: Sweeping the Jays helped us push ahead of the Rangers, but the Rays remain 5.5 games back in the wild card race and we've got a BIG series in Tampa starting tommorrow.

Thanks to Byrd, we'll get Lester, Beckett and Buchholz in the series... The Rays will be countering with a few their big guns as well (Garza, Price) but Kazmir is an Angel now and Sonnanstine doesn't scare me.

Time to shake off these last few starts Josh... we need to win at least 2 of 3 here.
