Jason Bay is 31. He tallied career highs in homers (36) and RBI (119) last season in his first full year with the Red Sox, but hit .267 overall.

John Lackey is also 31. He went 11-8 with a 3.83 ERA in 27 starts in 2009 with the Angels.

The Red Sox appear to be convinced that Bay is not worthy of a 5-year deal that would presumably be for around $75 million. But Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Sox are willing top offer Lackey a A.J. Burnett-type deal that would be around $85 million for 5 years.

I know that Jason Bay won't be a 30 HR, 100 RBI guy in 2014, but he's coming off of a career year, while Lackey hasn't been able to make 30+ starts since 2007. Do we really think that Lackey is more likely than Bay to stay healthy and productive over the next five years?

Let's make this simple... John Lackey is 2-5 with a 5.75 ERA and a .314 BAA at Fenway Park. Jason Bay has tallied a .280 BA, a .909 OPS, 45 homers and 157 RBI in 200 games in a Boston uniform.

Bottom Line: The Red Sox can re-sign Josh Beckett and ride Jon Lester, Clay Buccholz, Junichi Tazawa and Michael Bowden and Casey Kelly into 2014... Jason Bay can hold down left field for a few years and then become our DH if his defense become a problem.

I don't want to give either guy a five year deal, but I'd rather give it to Bay than Lackey.
