In the trade, the Diamondbacks would obtain Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy, while the Tigers will pick up Max Scherzer, Daniel Schlereth, Phil Coke and outfield prospect Austin Jackson.ESPN's Keith Law thinks the Tigers make out here, despite giving up the two biggest names in the deal...The deal would give the Yankees a starting center fielder. Starting outfielder Johnny Damon and designated hitter Hideki Matsui are both free agents.
In return, the Tigers would get a hard thrower in Scherzer and a well-regarded prospect in Austin Jackson, while the Diamondbacks get a pair of starting pitchers in Edwin Jackson and Kennedy.
I don't see how.
The Yankees lose some young talent, but no one that was going top make a huge impact in 2010 or in the future. The D-Backs get Jackson and Kennedy and while Max has potential, I'd rather have Jackson. Meanwhile, the Tigers lose their No. 2 starter and their best hitter not names Cabrera... and they don't appear to have a plan to replace them.
Once again, the team with the cash gets the proven player they need and other other teams will hope they get lucky with some young and talented kids. I have no right to complain as a Sox fan... other than because this deal makes the Yankees better.
I know they will be hurting in 2014 when the roster is full of 30+ guys and they have no prospects, but isn't that what we've been saying for years now? Seems to me that money and success can trump a lack of talent in the farm system.
If Theo plans on holding back this offseason and making 2010 a "transition year" it's going to be a long summer.
