Hap Tip to Fenway West for this nugget on Matsuzaka's first start of 2009:

Daisuke Matsuzaka struggled through 1-2/3 innings Wednesday but Japan recovered to defeat Australia 11-2 in a tuneup game for the World Baseball Classic.

Matsuzaka got the start against Australia but couldn't find his rhythm and left the game after giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three.

"There were good points and bad points," the Boston Red Sox right-hander said. "I'll work hard to get ready for the actual games."

Bottom Line: This was only a "tuneup" but two earned runs and three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings is a pretty good example of the roller-coaster that is Dice-K.
