The Red Sox, taking another low-risk, high-reward gamble, have signed free-agent reliever Takashi Saito to a one-year contract with a club option for 2010, according to major-league sources.

The deal was completed after Saito passed his physical on Friday. It includes a guarantee between $1.5 million and $2.5 million, the sources said, and Saito will have the chance to earn more than $7 million if he reaches all of his incentives.

Bottom Line: I think we all know the them for the 2009 season... "Keep your fingers crossed."

This is another smart move by Theo, but like Penny, Smoltz and Baldelli, signing Saito could amount to nothing... or it could be huge!

Saito is 39, so health and gae are concern here, but he saved 39 games for the Dodgers in 2007 while posting a 1.40 ERA and a .151 BAA. Astrained ligament in his elbow killed his 2008 season, but if he can get healthy, Saito would be a signifgant addition to the bullpen.

Specifically, if he became the permanent setup man ahed of Papelbon, Justin Masterson could move back into the rotation - depending on oh well or bad things go with Wakefield, Penny and/or Buchholz...

Big HT to Ian at Sox & Dawgs for sending me the scoop!
