Signing Paps to a one-year deal was the big news of the week, but here are some other stories you might have missed:
Curt Schilling expanded his role at WEEI with a regular spot on The Big Show... and used the new gig to tell the world that he doesn't deserve to be in the Hall of Fame:
"I feel very good about what I was able to do, I'm very proud of my career," Schilling said when posed the question by a caller. "I did [20] years -- far more than I ever expected. But I played with Randy Johnson, I played with Pedro Martinez, I played with Dale Murphy. I played with guys that have [Cy Young Award] plaques. I'd like to think I did well. I'd like to think that, if I had a must-win game, the guys I played with would want me to have the ball. But no, I don't think I deserve to be in the Hall of Fame."
He also continued to lobby for Jason Varitek's return to Boston both on the air and in his blog.
Keeping with WEEI... Larry Lucchino told Dale & Holley on Friday afternoon that he doesn't want past issues with Scott Boras to impeded furure negotiations - i.e. Jason Varitek:
"What is the old Yogi Berra-ism? 'I don't talk about the past. There's no future in it,'" said Lucchino. "What's even tougher is to bite my tongue and to not go on some kind of public rant or statement about negotiations that are past."
Tony Mazz takes a look at the current Red Sox payroll and includes a number of cool tid bits. Here's one:
"In Pedroia's case, while he will earn a base salary of just $1.5 million this year (after receiving a $1.5 million signing bonus), the average value of his contract rests at $6.75 million because the deal is back-loaded. This gives the Sox the benefit of some cash flow now, though they will lose that flexibility with Pedroia later in the deal."
Also, it's crazy to me to see that Jon, Jacoby, Justin and Jed combines will make just a hair over $2 million this season... another "J" - Julio - will amke $9 million... I'm just saying.
Keith Law posted his farm system rankings and Top 100 prospect rankings (click here for 1-25). He ranks the Red Sox farm system 7th overall and Lars Anderson as the 7th best prospect in the minors right now.
Here's a list of Law's favorite Red Sox prospects (HT to Sox & Dawgs)
1. Lars Anderson, 1B - No. 7 in top 100
2. Michael Bowden, RHP - No. 52 in top 100
3. Nick Hagadone, LHP - No. 81 in top 100
4. Junichi Tazawa, RHP - No. 90 in top 100
5. Daniel Bard, RHP - No. 94 in top 100
6. Josh Reddick, RF
7. Casey Kelly, RHP/SS
8. Stolmy Pimentel, RHP
9. Ryan Westmoreland, CF
10. Michael Almanzar, 3B
John Walsh at Hard Ball Times ranks the best defensive outfielders in the game... JD checked in at No. 21 out of 25 right fielders and Jason Bay was 22nd in left field thanks to some better defense after the move to Boston. This is a geat read.
Surviving Grady gives us the next installment of "Josh Beckett has a time machine" and an if you though Biff messed things up in Back to the Future II, just click over to SG.
Over the Monster think Tim Wakefield doesn't get the respect he deserves...
Fire Brand looks at Dustin Pedroia and Jed Lowrie with their "For Better or Worse" feature.
NESN announced that they will have even more coverage of Spring Training this year... including nine ST games against the Twins, Rays, Yankees, Marlins, Phillies and Mets.
And because I'm still a Coco Crisp fan... here's an article about Coco and why cracking his knuckles means he's finally healthy again.
