The Red Sox became one of the deepest teams in baseball this week. First they signed Rocco Baldelli and John Smoltz... then they brought back Mark Kotsay to help out in the outfield and at first base... ex-Dodgers closer Takashi Saito with a one-year deal.
The guys at Surviving Grady also found out thta Saito throws the mystcial "Shuuto" ball... The Red Sox will now have the Shutto, the Gyroball and the Okie Dokie flying around Fenway.
Michael Silverman says the Red Sox are expected to stay busy this week and will hold a media session with many of the promising rookies from the minor including Lars Anderson, Argenis Diaz, Josh Reddick, Zach Daeges, Mark Wagner, and Daniel Bard.
Newly acquired starter Brad Penny, passed his physical and talked with Sean McAdam about his health:
"I was trying to push something I should have rested," said Penny, who passed a physical for the Red Sox on Thursday. "Even when I was on the DL I was throwing. I was a little stubborn and tried to push myself. I've had no problems. I'm feeling pretty strong ... I feel good right now, so hopefully it's cool. That's not the Brad Penny last year. I know that, and hopefully the people in Boston, they know that. I'm real excited. I can't wait to get out there."
Jim Rice might finally be voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame today...
Fenway West found some good news about David Ortiz in the Herald:
According to a source close to him, David Ortiz is getting up at 8 a.m. every morning for strength and cardio workouts, followed by hitting at 11 a.m. He is said to be experiencing no discomfort or pain in his left wrist, injured last season.
And Ken Rosenthal broke the news that Rangers Gold Glove short stop Michael Young doesn't want to move to third base again and has asked to be traded.
