nick green red sox.jpgIf Clay Buchholz wants to stay in Boston, he'll need to do pitch better than he did last night. Buchhy used 107 pitches to get through 5 1/3 innings last night against the Athletics. He only gave up two runs, but he was finghting out of jams all night thanks to nine hits and two walks. It wasn't a horrible performance, but after dominating all spring in Triple A, I think we were all hoping for more from Buchholz - especially against one of the league's worst offenses.

Clay struggled mentally and physically in 2008, so he should be commended for fighting his way out of some jams last night. He had a shot at the win, but the leagues best bullpen, finally misfired last night - on all cylinders.

Yahoo! sums up the game pretty well with this:

Boston led 5-2 after three, 6-2 after six and 7-4 at the end of eight innings. Papelbon came in to pitch the ninth, but Cust drew a leadoff walk and scored on Tommy Everidge's first major-league hit--a double high off the Green Monster.

Papelbon opened the 9th with a walk and then coughed up an RBI double to make it 7-5. Then Nick Green "pulled a Lugo" and made two throwing errors in the inning, enabling the A's to tie it up 7-7. Manny Delcarmen was called in to keep the A's at bay in extras, but the Red Sox offense went back to sleep and MDC eventually gave up two runs in the 11th while pitching on fumes.

Bottom Line: Delcarmen may have given up the winning runs, but this one falls on Green's shoulders. At least the Yankees lost...

Game Notes: Ellsbury continued his multi-hit streak going 2 for 6 last night... Youk had a big night going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI... Lowell's hitting streak remains intact after a 2 for 4 night... and JD Drew has quietly raised his average 11 points during this homestand... to a whopping .244.
