Apparently me plea for a solid outing from  brad penny red sox athletics.jpgBrad Penny fell on deaf ears yesterday.

Instead, Penny coughed up a homer on his first pitch and five runs in the first inning.

Not really what we were hoping for Brad.

I told Penny that if he didn't inspire me with his start I would call Theo and tell him to tade Penny back to the Dodgers for Dee Brown. And with Jason Bay fanning three more times last night, I'm starting to think I might be a genius.

Some would argue that Penny has been a solid No. 3 or 4 this season, but I'm not buying it. He can't get beyond six innings of work and the ERA is up over 5.00 now... with Matsuzaka on the DL and Smoltz still trying to get his shit together, Penny needs to step up. But last night's start has me salivating a little more about the idea of Roy Halladay in Boston.

On the bright side... whatever they injected into Mike Lowell seems to be working. They tell me it's somekind of lubricant for his ailing hip joint, but the 8-game hitting streak and the five RBI last night makes me think they gave him the Super Solider serum.

Oh and Jacoby Ellsbury can't be stopped right now. You can only hope to contain him. He stole his 46th base of the season and is now eight shy of the club record of 54. He's also riding a 6-game multi-hit steak that includes two triples, five steals, five runs, four RBI and a .464 BA.

Bottom Line: You can't blame the offense right now, they've scored 22 runs in the past three games... it's the pitching that has failed us as of late.
