I'm a little late with this, but this news is worthy of a weekend note... at 42-year old Tim Wakefield is finally an All Star.
Wake is 10-3 with a 4.30 ERA and 53 strikeouts this season and was chosen as a reserve by Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon, who will manage the AL team in St. Louis on July 14. Wake was battling for a pitchers spot with AL strikeout leader Justin Verlander, ERA leader Zack Grienke and fellow 10-game winnners Roy Halladay and Kevin Slowey. Verlander, Grienke and Halladay made th All Star roster but Slowey lost to Wake and the somewhat forgotten Edwin Jackson, who was traded from Tampa to Detroit last year and has posted a 2.59 ERA with 6 wins and 93 strikeouts. Mark Buehrle, Felix Hernandez and Jsoh Beckett also made the team - giving the Sox three pitchers when you include Jonathan Papelbon.
Wake has won 10 or more games in 11 of his 15 seasons with the Red Sox and the guys at Surviving Grady feel he has been the face of the franchise. I can't say I disagree and it's so great to see him finally make an All Star squad. Now Wake will make a push to earn 2000 strikeouts and possibly pass Roger Clemens and Cy Young for the most victories in Red Sox history at 192.
Congrats Wake!
