Just some food for thought...
In 2004, Manny and Big Papi lead the Red Sox to a World Series with some staggering offensive numbers:
Ortiz hit .301 with 41 homers, 139 RBI and 94 runs scored. Manny hit .308 with 43 homers, 130 RBI and 108 runs scored. Both player logged over 580 at-bats that year.
In 2009, Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay have become the new Dynamic Duo in the 3/4 spots. But are they as good and Manny and Ortiz?
Youk missed some time this season, so he'll be lucky to log 525 at-bats, but if he does, his current pace would give him 33 homers, 109 RBI and 112 runs scored to go along with a .300+ BA. If he stays healthy, Jason Bay should tally at least 575 at-bats this year which would result in 42 homers, 154 RBI and 108 runs scored at his current pace.
Bottom Line: Manny and Ortiz hit 84 combined ding dongs... Youk and Bay are set to hit 75. Manny and Ortiz also win the RBI battle, but just barely - 269 to 263. But Youk and Bay are on pace to score more runs (220 to 202).
Manny and Ortiz were otherworldy on 2004, but Youk and Bay are (surprisingly) on a similar path... here's hoping this path also leads to another World Series Championship.
