... okay it was for three innings but this is huge news!

Brad Penny no-hit the Detroit Tigers today in his first start of the spring. Penny held the Tigers to just one walk and struck out three while facing ten batters. Here's what Penny had to say after the game:

"It was nice," Penny said. "I felt good. It has been a while since I've got out there and felt good, you know. Last year, I went out. I was pitching, but I didn't really feel like I had a lot behind it. Another stepping stone. I felt pretty good."

Penny has no concerns about his right shoulder -- "not at all," he said -- and felt no fatigue between his last minor league start and this afternoon. He pitched at 100 percent, he said, and it's been a while since he could claim that.

"Last year was a frustrating year for me," Penny said. "Mentally, I was shot, just because going out there every day and being hurt. It's hard enough to get these guys out when you're feeling great. To go out there and have that pain, it makes it even harder. It's nice to go out there with some confidence and some life on my fastball."

Oh... and the Red Sox hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back ding dongs today in the 7-6 win.

Mike Lowell and Jason Bay got the ball rolling and Chris Carter and Ivan Ochoa made it a four-run 6th inning. The homer was Mike Lowell's only hit of the day, but it was his third home run in just 19 spring at-bats... a great sign.

Carter's home run was his 5th of the spring and second in two days... he was 3 for 4 on the day and is really giving Jeff Bailey a run for his money for the "Kotsay position" and to be honest, I'm starting to wonder if Bailey and Carter should be on the 25-man roster... period.

Other Notes: Youk got one at-bat and did not reach base... Ortiz was 2 for 3 and STOLE A BASE!!! ... and Papelbon fanned two in a clean inning.
