Red Sox Monster recently talked with Carl Beane, the voice of Fenway Park. Beane weighed in on a variety of things, including:
1) His appearances at not only weddings, but funerals
2) His belief that if David Ortiz, Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett were healthy, the Sox "definitely" would have beaten the Phillies in the World Series
3) What it takes to not be a "chump" in the PA booth
4) The infamous benches-clearing incident between Boston and New York area media during a game in 2007
Dan and Carl also talked about some cool behind the scenes stuff that an aspiring announcer or broadcaster would want to read... Here's one of my favorite lines:
Red Sox Monster: At this point, I imagine there may have been one or two where you had to play catch-up after the fact. Have you ever run into a problem?
Carl Beane: No, I've been able to get it right. Again, if I'm not sure, in between innings or before the game starts, I'll run down to the other radio booth and say, 'Hey, you've got a new guy here. How do you pronounce his name?' And they'll tell me, "Shigetoshi Hasegawa." OK, got it.
"Shigetoshi Hasegawa" - Ha! Piece of cake right!?
