The Red Sox piled up 16 hits against the Cardinals today. The first four batters reached to open the game and Pedroia and Ortiz each grabbed an early RBI to give the Sox a 2-0 lead.
Pedrioia went 2 for 3 with a double, and RBI and three runs scored... Ortiz was 2 for 4 with an RBI... Youk was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and a walk... and Jacoby went 2 for 5 in the leadoff spot.
Jason Varitek hit his third home run of the spring adding 2 runs to the lead... all three homers have come from the left side - a great sign for Tek. He was 2 for 3 on the day.
Nick Green was 3 for 4 and remains most the most likely guy to fill the iopen utility infielder position... JD Drew had two hits on the day but lined ouot with the bases loaded in the first... but Jason Bay had a worse day ending that same threat with an inning-ending DP and then leaving early with dehydration - The Globe says he's fine.
Josh Beckett was cruising early, but surrendered a home run to rookie David Freese in the third and then got roughed up in the 6th, allowing thre more runs on four consecutive singles. Beckett thre 81 pitches, 53 for strikes.
Saito and Ram Ram each had clean innings and the Red Sox won 11-4 in extras.
** I prematurely posted the 7-4 win and the Cards scored 4 in the ninth... whoops.
