angel red sox bullpen.jpgJered Weaver frustrated the Red Sox for seven inning last night, but Justin Masterson kept the game close, despite six innings of wackiness, and the Angels bullpen eventually coughed up 3 runs - handing the Red Sox a 4-3 victory.

David Ortiz gave Red Sox Nation a scare when he took a pitch off the wrist in the 8th, but with the bases loaded it forced in a run and The Large Father will take whatever RBIs he can get right now. The kept the bases juiced from "Mr.Clutch," but Jason Bay decided to mix things up and rather than simply hit another game-winning ding dong, he grounded out to second base while scoring Ellsbury from third to tie the game.

Ram Ram was nasty as usual in the 8th despite watching Lugo make another error to lead off the inning... enabling Jason Varitek to play hero in the 9th.

JD Drew laced a single to start the inning and Varitek drove him in with a double to deep center. The Captain may be hitting .239, but hits like this keep the boos at bay.

"Tek had a real good at-bat. He got a breaking ball up and fortunately for us it got to the wall," Terry Francona said. "He's getting the bat into the ball better. I don't think his batting average is the end-all, be-all for what he's doing here. Sometimes it's (more important) when you get a hit, and none were bigger than that hit tonight."

Bottom Line: The West Coast road trip always sucks, so it's great to get a win right out of the gate. Masterson's start was both disappointing and promising at the same time. He admitted that he could't throw a strike in the early goings and after being warned for throwing behind Torri Hunter, the kid could have unravelled. But he locked it down after that and managed to hold the Angels to just two runs through six innings.

Note: Ortiz says his wrist (the same one he injured in '08) felt okay 15 minutes later, but the true test will be how sore it is today. Francona expects him to play tonight.
