That about sums up last night's 13-0 loss to the Rays last night.
Yesterday we told you that Josh Beckett would be looking to take out his frustration on the Rays last night and he did... for 2 1/3 innings.
Beckett fanned five of the first nine batters he faced before imploding in the 3rd inning.
Beckett struckout Heranandez with Bartlett on first before loading the bases on an Upton single and a walk to Crawford. Longoria cleard the table with a double to deep right and Burrell drove him in after Beckett caught Pena looking. Whe nthe smoke cleared, it was 4-0 Rays and Beckett had lost his oneryness... what? That's a real word...
The Rays scored two more in the 4th, driving Beckett out of the game with a 4 2/3 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, 8 K line on the night. In typical Beckett fashion, he didn;t have much to say after the game...
"It's frustrating. It's a lot of things," Beckett said. "I didn't do that in between my last two starts."
Things got even worse in the 8th when Javier Lopez gave up five runs on four hits and a walk... I'm not sure what's more embarassing: the game-losing error against the Indians or getting shelled for five runs in the 8th during mop-up duty.
It got so bad that yesterday's hero Jon Van Every was called in from right field to replace Lopez... that's right, Van Every... the outfielder. And Lopez was sent to right field with his tail between his legs. Van Every retired the Rays with pure grit and a 78 MPH fastball, and sits atop the ERA leader board with fellow OF-turned-RP Nick Swisher with a 0.00 ERA.
Extra Bases has the facts on this "historic" event:
The last position player to pitch for the Red Sox was David McCarty on Oct. 3, 2004, and the last pitcher to play a position was Tom Burgmeier on August 3, 1980. He played left field. Last year, Alex Cora warmed up against the Orioles, but never made it into the game.
Bottom Line: I did my best to avoid giving any credit to the Matt "The Llama" Garza in this post... but it's clear we have no solution for him and his spitting.
"He was about as good as you could get," Boston manager Terry Francona said.
"We've got to try to find a way to figure him out," added Pedroia.
