From Extra Bases:
Daisuke Matsuzaka threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings for Pawtucket last night. In typical Dice-K fashion, he breezed through the first inning, fanning two batters, but struggled in the second, walking two batters before wigling out of the jam. Overall he threw 47 pitches, 29 for strikes and hit as high a 92 MPH on the radar gun.
Matsuzaka had not pitched in a game since April, his one-inning, 50-pitch implosion in Oakland. The zest and velocity missing from his fastball that night returned at McCoy, convincing Matsuzaka he is not far from leaving the disabled list and rejoining the Red Sox.
"I think I'm ready to pitch in a game," Matsuzaka said. "I wouldn't go so far to say I don't need any rehab starts, but I feel physically ready. And by that I mean I'm ready to go through any rehab program that's handed to me. Health-wise, I have no problems at all."
Bottom Line: Matsuzaka will need 2 or 3 rehab starts before he returns to the Red Sox, meaning we might not see him in Boston until early June.
