ace card tim wakefield red sox.jpgA dismal west coast trip, Big Papi's missing bat and Youk's DL stint have had Red Sox Nation in a bit of a funk lately.

But somebody forgot to tell Tim Wakefield.

Wake knuckleballed the hottest offense in baseball for eight solid innings last night, holding them to one run and five hits. With the offense sputtering and the bullpen getting overworked, Wake rose to the occasion and has been doing so all season.

"I guess I've just been that guy," Wakefield said. "It's not like I'm trying harder. Knowing the situation, I'm just going out there, and my job as a starter is to go deep in a game and keep us in the game as long as possible. Tonight was one of those nights where I had very good stuff."

The offense stuggled again last night, but I do think it's time to get excited about Jacoby Ellsbury and his 14-game hit streak. He extended the streak with a 2-hit performance last night. Nationals' third baseman Ryan Zimmerman had his 30-game hit streak snapped last Wednesday... it was the longest consecutive hit streak by any player this season.

Bottom Line: Wake has been our most consistent starter and dropped his ERA back under 4.00 to 3.59 with last night's performance. With Matsuzaka returning this week, Beckett coming off of his best start since Opening Day, and five more games at the Fens, the Sox look poised to make a run.

That is of course if the offense decides to wake up and Julio Lugo decides to stop making errors.

Also... I love Kevin Millar, but somebody needs to tell him to stop hitting home runs against the Sox... especially when the score is 2-0. Not cool Kevin... not cool.
