Jason Bay and Matt Holliday are the best bats in the 2010 Free Agent class. While Scott Boras is hoping Matt Holliday can improve on a mediocre start to 2009, Jason Bay and his team have to licking their chops after watching him tear through April and May.
Holiday has been adjusting to life out side of the National League... and Coors Field, resulting in a .268 BA. He's also hitting cleanup for the A's who rank 26th in the league in runs scored and last in the AL in team batting average at .238... so Holliday will be hard pressed to total his expected 100+ runs and RBI. That said, with 26 RBI already, he is on pace for 101 with 550 at-bats... but with just five ding dongs this season, Holliday is on pace for just 19 homers in 2009.
Jason Bay made the leap to the AL half way through the 2008 season and didn't miss a beat, hitting .293 with 9 homers and 37 RBI in just 49 games. He picked up where he left off in 2009 and leads the Sox with homers (11), RBI (40) and runs scored (32). He's also hitting .294... and that is after a rough west coast trip that dropped him from .324. Bay is on pace to hit 44 ding dongs and drive in 161 RBI this season...
He's already came back to earth over the past 10 days, but his hot start has the Red Sox wondering if they should have worked harder to extend the Canadian Crusher this past offseason.
So... the question is... who would you rather have on your team?
Matt Holliday has 40 HR power and if he we hitting cleanup for Boston or New York or even Texas... he's be a lock for 100 runs and RBI. Jason Bay struggled for recognition in Pittsburgh, but since he's come to Boston, he's proven that he's always been one of the top production guys in the league.
Both guys are going to make a truckload of cash this offseason... but who would you prefer to build you offense around - Bay or Holliday?
