From The LA Times:
Scott Boras threw out the ceremonial first pitch in free agency today, comparing Matt Holliday to Mark Teixeira in the impact the agent believes each player can have on a club. "These guys are blue-collar superstars," Boras said. "They don't hit 50 home runs, but they're complete players. They can give you something without swinging a bat." Teixeira signed with the New York Yankees last winter, for $180 million. Boras would not say what his asking price would be for Holliday, but he made clear he considered Holliday's abilities in getting on base, hitting for power and playing superior defense similar to those of Teixeira. "There are differences between hitters and complete players," Boras said. "Matt Holliday is a complete player. "There is, frankly, no one like him in the market."Um... Scotty? Jason Bay is also a free agent and until Holliday proves he can succeed in the AL, I think Bay is the better player. I like to see the Red Sox keep Bay, but of Boras plans on inflating Holliday's price tag, Bay will probably go along for the ride. That will most likely force everyone but the Sox, Yankees and Angels out of the bidding... but can the Yankees really afford to drop another $180M? Bottom Line: IMO - After losing out on Teixeira, the Sox NEED to sign one of these guys... and if Bay chooses to ride along with Holliday to make sure he gets the most money possible, Boras will indirectly make Theo's life miserable this winter. The quicker the Sox can lock down a left fielder, the easier it will be to focus on other issues.
