Tim Wakefield is going to fight off his back back and numb leg and pitch start one more game for the Red Sox tonight.
Maybe forever.
Wake earned an All-Star nomination for his 11-3 start to this season, but after throwing what has to be one million knuckleballs in his major league career, Wake's body broke down on him again and he's made just three starts in the second half.
Red Sox Nation knows what Tim Wakefield has meant to this team and since he's not likely to be on the post season roster, this could be the last time we see "The Knucklah" in Fenway Park.
So give Tim the standing O he deserves tonight. He'll shrug it off and tell us all that he wants to come back next season, but after almost hanging 'em up in 2008, I just don't see Wake comiong back from this.
Our buddies at Fenway West organized a contest to see how quickly Wake would hit the 2,000 K mark this season. With 1,977, he won't reach that milestone this season, but his early success did earn him his 11th season with 10 or more wins and 189 overall.
Bottom Line: Red from Surviving Grady feels that Wake hass been the face of the Red Sox franchise with 14 years of service under his belt. He's won big game and pitched mop up duty without blinking an eye. He's succeeded as a starter and a reliever, something he shares with a small group of guys like HoF-bound John Smoltz.
And he did it all with a knuckleball.
