The Red Sox lost their sixth straight game last night, 12-0.
Pretty embarassing for a team heading to the postseason, but consider these fun facts before you assume a 3-game sweep by the Angels next week.
Roy Halladay held the Sox to just three hits last night and threw another complete game. Doc has actually struggled at Fenway in his career (6-9, 4.10 after last night), but that was his 9th complete game of the season. The guy is good.
He's even better when he's facing a Triple A lineup. The Sox started just two regulars last night - David Ortiz and Alex Gonzalez. I'm not sure the Sox ever had a chance at winning this game, so don't freak out. Tito gave the regulars a day off after popping the champagne at midnight on Tuesday. One could argue that the celebration was unwise, but I think it was just what the doctor ordered. The pressure is off now and with a day of rest before this final 4-game sereis again the Tribe, I'll bet good money we see good things going forward.
Joey Gathright was 1 for 16 against Halladay before last night's game, but he grabbed two of the three hits we had last night as the leadoff man and solidified his spot as the extra OF on the playoff roster. Gathright had a niice night at the plate, but he should be on the postseason roster for his speed. Simply put: He's our 2009 Dave Roberts. Josh Reddick looked great from Augsut 1st through August 2nd (note sarcasm) but he hit .127 in 71 ABs in Pawtucket and hasn't been much better in Boston: .179, 56 AB.
Manny Delcarmen allowed three hits, a homer and two runs in his inning of work last night. That pretty much closes the book on the "Should Manny be on the postseason roster?" discussion. He now has a 14.14 ERA through ten September appearances, with four homers allowed and a .405 BAA. MDC had another good first half, but this my finally be the year the Sox include him in an offseason trade package. Maybe he'll have the same kind of success ex-Sox reliever David Aardsma has in Seattle this year - King Felix anyone?
One question remains... Is Jed Lowrie your back up infielder in October? It's not like he's going to see much playing time, but Jed hasn't really stepped up and secured the job over the injured Nick Green. If Green can get healthy this week, I'm not sure what Tito and the Sox will do here... but here are some interesting numbers:
Lowrie
career men on base w/ 2 outs: 15 for 71 (.211)
career RISP w/ 2 outs: 9 for 47 (.191)
Green
2009 men on base w 2 outs: 17 for 51 (.337)
2009 RISP w/ 2 outs: 14 for 39 (.359)
