Even with a bunch of regulars resting, and a rain-soaked field, the Red Sox managed to pound the Indians yesterday 11-6, thanks Victor Martinez' first grand salami - ever.
Josh Beckett started the game after missing his last start with back spasms and had to shake the rust off early. He allowed four quick runs in the first and had RSN nervous, but V-MART capped a seven run second inning with his gradn salm and the Sox never looked back.
Brian Anderson filled in JD Drew again in right and had went 3 for 3, including a bases-loaded RBI single that started the 2nd inning rally and a solo ding dong in the third.
Pedroia and Dusty Brown also hit solo shots in the game.
Beckett settled down in the third and allowed just one hit the rest of the way, while fanning four. He said he started throwing too hard early on, something he struggled with earlier this season:
"The most important thing today was to be healthy," Beckett said. "I definitely needed to get some emotions in check. Every pitch I tried to throw harder than the one before that. It caused me to miss location."
Bottom Line: As expected, the offense is clicking again. Hopefully Beckett got all the rust off and is ready to go for Game 2 next week. The Sox will wrap up the regular season today and have a shot at tying last year's win total of 95.
The Angles have won their last two and Kazmir looked very sharp last night... the Yankees have lost three in a row and might have peaked too early... ad the Twins and Tigers are tied atop the AL Central - making today's games do-or-die for both clubs.
Notes:
Jacoby Ellsbury was resting a sore ankle yesterday, but I'm sure he wants to play today and get his 70th stolen base... Things looked bad for Alex Gonzalez initially after getting hit in the hand two days ago, but additional x-rays show no fracture. He could play today... Jason Bay's average was down to .250 on July 30th, but with three hits today, he could get it back over .270 - to go along with career highs in HR (36) and RBI (118)... Jonathan Papelbon will not join the 40-save club this season, but he could get 39 today - for those of you looking to win the TBS Paps posters. Paps has had 35 or more saves for four straight seasons.
