clay buchholz red sox royals.jpgMaybe he needed to know that he wasn't getting traded bay on July 31st.

Maybe it was the very large gap that seperates Triple A hitters from Major League hitters.

Maybe his repore with Jason Varitek just wasn't as good as it has been with Victor Martinez.

Whatever it was, Clay Buchholz has been one of the leagues best starters since August 1st.

Clay's 1.73 ERA and 3-0 record has him ranked among Jon Lester (4-0, 1.67), C.C. Sabathia (3-0, 1.61) and a solid start tonight could have him sharing company with Zack Greinke (2-0, 0.35) and Felix Hernandez (3-0, 0.58) for the best stats in September.

Clay 14 Ks are low when compared to Lester and C.C.'s  28 and Greinke's 27, but his 54.5% groundball rate and 18.7% line drive have enabled him to win without the big K numbers.

The Sox will be looking to leave KC on a high note with a 3-game set in the Bronx coming up, and I expect Buchhy to oblige. The Royals will be countering with rookieAnthony Lerew, who will be making his first major league start of 2009. He did pitch two innings against Boston in 2007 and gave up three runs on two homers, 5 hits and 2 walks.

I'll take some more of that action tonight... a'thank you!

Bottom Line: Buchhy has won 5 of his last 7 starts and the Red Sox have gone on to win all 7 of those games.

ps. could Buchhy look any more stick bug-like in that photo? Get that kid a plate of pasta!
