Daisuke Matsuzaka took a tough 3-0 loss this afternoon in New York. He held the Yankees to just one run, a solo homer by Cano, through seven innings of work, but the Red Sox were shutout by C.C. Sabathia, who earned his 19th win and put the division safely out of reach.
Matsuzaka mixed five walks in with six hits and three strikeouts, looking like to 18-game winner he was in 2008 - a good sign for the Red Sox who will likely use him as the No. 4 starter throughout the postseason.
It wasn't the most effective start of Dice-K's career, but we all know the Yankees know how to work the count, so the key here is the lone run Matsuzaka surrendered. If this were June, I'd be thrilled, but the fact that C.C. was able to shut down one of the hottest offenses in baseball, makes me nervous about October.
Most would agree that before this series, the Red Sox had the better rotation and bullpen, but does this game prove that the insanely productive Yankees lineup can win any game, no matter how well picthed from on side?
Time will tell, but for now, the Red Sox will need to stay focused on the positive: Jon Lester has a bruised leg, not a broken one and Matsuzaka pitched well, and did so with the spanish speaking Victor Martinez behind the plate.
