Reports are flying in that the Red Sox have signed Cuban-born catcher Adalberto Ibarra to a major league deal worth $4.3 million.
NESN says Ibarra, 23, has played for Cuban team Camaguey, playing first, second and third base. In the 2008-09 season, he hit .363 and clubbed 25 doubles.
Peter Abraham from Extra Bases says Ibarra has an "elegant swing" but there's only one question Red Sox Nation wants answered: Can he throw out would be base stealers?
This short write-up about him reminds us that Ibarra is more than just a catcher... he also plays 3B, 2B and 1B and has a career fielding percentage of 962. There isn't much room for him at the major league level right now, but with Mark Wagenr, Luis Exposito and other highly-toted catching prospects already in the minor league stystem, the Sox maye be thinking about playing him in the infield in the future...
