Matthew Pouliot from NBC's Hardball Talk did his best to predict the 2010 AL All-Star roster today.
He has six Yankees, six Red Sox and three Rays listed, but he doesn't expect any Sox players to make the starting lineup - save for the possibility of Buchholz or Lester starting the game.
Here's Matt's list:
The 2010 AL All-Stars
Lineup
RF Ichiro Suzuki
SS Derek Jeter
C Joe Mauer
1B Justin Morneau
DH Vladimir Guerrero
2B Robinson Cano
CF Josh Hamilton
3B Evan Longoria
LF Carl Crawford
Reserves
C Victor Martinez
1B Miguel Cabrera
1B Kevin Youkilis
2B Dustin Pedroia
2B Ty Wigginton
3B Alex Rodriguez
3B Jose Bautista
SS Alex Gonzalez
OF Torii Hunter
OF Alex Rios
OF David DeJesus
OF Shin-Soo Choo
Pitchers
David Price
Clay Buchholz
Jon Lester
Cliff Lee
Phil Hughes
CC Sabathia
Jered Weaver
Mariano Rivera
Jose Valverde
Jonathan Papelbon
Rafael Soriano
Andrew Bailey
Matt Thornton
One commentor noted that Matt didn't include a player from the Athletics, and Matt responded with Andrew Bailey as the best choice, likely bouncing Rangers' closer Feliz off the list.
David Ortiz is in the dicsussion for DH, but manager Joe Girardi will have the option to take a 1B/3B over a pure DH player if he wants to and that pretty much makes Youk a lock.
There are two outfielders I think should be on this list - or in the running at least:
Delmon Young, MIN - .306 BA, .846 OPS, 8 HR, 43 RBI, 17 2B, 32 R
Magglio Ordonez, DET - .333 BA, .930 OPS, 9 HR, 47 RBI, 14 2B, 42 R
But Matt's guesses are good because his OF represents the White Sox, Royals and Indians... all teams that don't have other players worthy of an All-Star nod.
Bottom Line: The Sox and Yankees have a few pitchers that will be in the mix for the starting job, so the next few starts for Lester, Buchholz, Hughes, Sabatthia, and even Andy Pettitte, will be fun to watch.
What do you guys think of this projected All-Star team?
