After Tuesday night's win over Arizona, Sox manager Terry Francona, GM Theo Epstein, and assistant GM Ben Cherington met in Francona's office to solidify that their starter Friday vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers would be 22-year-old rookie Felix Doubront.
Doubrant, a lefthander, is 6-1 with a 2.11 ERA in eight minor league starts between Double A Portland and Triple A Pawtucket.
He takes the turn of Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was placed on the 15-day DL Saturday after feeling discomfort in his right forearm.
Here's the SoxProspects.com bio on Doubrant:
Doubront utilizes a 91-94 mph fastball, a very good 79-81 mph changeup with screwball action, and a developing mid-70s curveball. Flawless and fluid downward pitching motion with excellent control. Deceptive delivery, hitters don't pick up the ball until late, causing his fastball to look a little faster. Used to struggle against left-handed batters, but seemed to fix this issue in 2009. He has a reserved and modest demeanor, but is aggressive and poised on the mound. Sometimes has the tendency to leave the ball up in the zone too much, giving up too many home runs. Athletic and agile in the field. Doubront struggled in 2007 due to numerous injuries, including recovery from a hernia operation.
Boof Bonser would have been the other option, but Boof is 0-2 with a 6.34 ERA through 32.2 innings with Pawtucket. He has been sharp as of late: 0.69 ERA, 11 K, 2 BB in 14 IP (3 G), but the Sox apparently want to give Felix a look.
I hate to say it, but they might be showcasing him for a potential trade in July... just sayin'.
