After scoring 17 runs on Monday, the Sox were held to just 1 run through 7 innings my the mediocre Ervin Santana.

The Red Sox eventually won the game 5-1, after taking advantage of RP Kevin Jespen's inability to throw a strike. Martinez and Youkilis lead off the inning with walks and JD Drew loaded the bases for David Ortiz with a single to left. Big Papi, grounded into a double play (more on that later), but Jeremey Hermida came through with a fly ball to the left field corner that spun Juan Rivera around and cleared the bases. Then Mike Lowell hit for Darnell MacDonald and drove in the 5th run with a double... having all of wondering why Tito didn't have Lowell hit for Ortiz with the game on the line just a few at-bats earlier.

Jon Lester was impressive, fighting his way through the 8th inning and squeezing out of a bases loaded jam to hold the tie at 1-1. He needed 120 pitches to get the job done, but this was a defining start for Lester. He's now 2-0 with a 0.44 ERA in his last 3 starts (20.2 IP).

Bottom Line: We got the win in the end, but this isn't the first time the Sox have erupted one night and been impotent the next. On 4/26, the Sox scored 13 at Toronto but couldn't;t solve the "great Shawn Marcum." Like Lester last night, Buchholz pitched his ass off for 8 innings and the Sox eventually got a second run ion the 8th on a bases loaded walk by Mike Lowell.

The Sox won both of these games, but it would be nice to see them spread the offense around and not rely on late game heroics. But hey... beggars can't be choosers, right? I'll take the W.
