Jacoby Ellsbury is expected to come off of the disabled list this Saturday in Philadelphia.
Ellsbury was 3-4 with a stolen base in his last rehab game with the Sea Dogs and feels good about diving into the bag after taking a month off to heal a few broken ribs.
“Trying to catch every aspect as far as sliding back, stealing and I think I came through it really well,” Ellsbury said. “Diving back, that was kind of the last thing we wanted to do just for confidence sake and see how it held up and it did pretty good.”
He went 4 for 10 with 2 walks in three minor league games.
Ellsbury is expected to jump right back into the leadoff spot for the Sox and when Marco Scuatro tennis elbow feels better, he will likely slide into the 9 hole.
“It gives us a different element, the kind of game-changing speed that teams have to be aware of. It is certainly a different look than when we don’t have him in here. Besides, I think the guys that have played have done a really good job,” manager Terry Francona said on Thursday.
Scutaro logged 145 at bats as the leadoff man this year and hit .269 with 5 doubles, 2 homers and 18 walks, while scoring 24 runs. Just for comparrison, Ellsbury totaled a .298 BA with 10 doubles, 1 homer and 11 walks, while scoring 28 runs through his firts 214 ABs of 2009. Ellsbury also stole 22 bases over that time frame, but overall Scoots did a serviceable job filling in.
