Starters
Tim Wakefield (0-1, 6.03)
Shaun Marcum (1-1, 3.19)
This will be a quick one today...
Wake is 17-13 with a 3.93 ERA against the Jays. He hasn't faced them this year and didn't fair well against them in 2009: 1-2, 6.89 ERA, .313 BAA. Wakfield have been better at Fenway (4.86 ERA) this year than he has own the road (7.36)... so maybe that will help. The Jays lead the AL in Ks, so if his knuckleball is dancing, we could see a good amount of strikeouts from Wake today. Wakefield hasn't started a game since April 25th against Baltimore, but he has been solid in his last two relief outings, including a clean inning against the Yankees on May 9th.
Marcum has been very good through seven starts this year. He hasn't allowed more than 4 runs in any start, but is just 1-1 on the season. He's 4-2 with a 3.33 ERA against the Red Sox and that includes a strong game in Toronto on April 27th. Marcum allowed one run on 4 hits in that game and lasted 7 innings, but the Sox squeezed out a 2-1 win, when the bullpen walked in the go ahead run in the 8th. The Red Sox probably have the best offense of any team he's faced this year, but he's held everyone in check, so the Sox will need to work hard for a win today.
Key Matchups
Beltre is 7 for 15 (.357) with a pair of ding dongs against Marcum. He's in a mi-funk right now (0-7, 4 Ks), but he could snap out of it today. Marcum has handled lefties pretty well in his career, but J.D. Drew is red hot right now has 6 multi-hits games in his last 10 starts.
Aaron Hill has handled the knuckleball well, posting a .303 average against Wake. And Lyle Overabay is 7 for 22 (318) with a homer.
