YOU'RE ON A NEED TO KNOW BASIS...

Tim Wakefield (1-2, 4.44) is 11-6 with a 3.84 ERA in 20 starts against the Royals. Wake's last start was a gem, blanking the Phillies for 8 innings, while allowing 5 hits and 2 walks. This will be Wakefield's 3rd start of the month, his only other start cam on May 12, when he held the Blue Jays to 3 runs through 7 innings but took the 2-3 loss.

Kyle Davies (3-3, 4.53) is 1-0 with a 2.45 in 2 starts against the Sox. One of those came earlier this season when he held the Red Sox to 3 runs through 6 innings in what eventually became a 4-3 win for the Royals. Davies has held the Rockies, Orioles and Indians to 2 runs or less in his last 3 starts, but is 1-2 in those starts due to a complete lack of offensive support - 3 runs total from KC.

ISN'T THAT SPECIAL

Davies struggles with righties, allowing a .284 BAA in 22 starts last year and a .266 BAA in 2010. His K/BB ratios are wacky as well, posting a 25/5 K/BB rate against lefties and a 14/12 K/BB rate against righties. JD Drew and David Ortiz are two of the Sox hottest hitters right now, and traditionally you would throw all your lefties at a RH starter, but it will be interesting to see how that plays out tonight...

Wake's win over the Phillies was his first since July 8th of 2009. He did miss most of July and all of Augsut, but that's still amazing. Part of the problem was run support as the Sox had scored just 3.4 RPG during those 9 starts between wins. They scored 8 in the Phillies game and have scored 5.5 RPG over the last 11 games dating back to the Yankees series.

KEY MATCHUPS

Billy Butler is 3 for 10 (.300) witha homer against Wake. The rest of the Royals either haven't see much of Wake or simply haven't hit him. He's also 9 for his last 16 (.563) and is riding a 4-game hitting streak.

Victor Martinez is supposed to start tonight with Wake on the bump. He's 4 for 15 (.267) with a homer and two doubles off Davies.
