Clay Buchholz out wiggled Wade Davis yesterday and gave the Red Sox a huge win against the Rays.

In the end, Buchholz line of 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8 K looks pretty solid, but the most impressive aspect of the outing was his ability to pitch his way around two bad situations early in the game.

Buchhy escaped a bases-loaded jam when John Jaso grounded into an inning-ending double play in the first inning. Then he wiggled out of another tight spot by striking out Reid Brigna and Jason Bartlett to strand two more runners in scoring position in the second.

The Buchholz of old might have folded in those situation, but Clay has been locked as of late and is pitching with total confidence.

Wade Davis? Not so much...

Down 0-1 in the 3rd, Davis appeared to have earned the second out of the inning when Pedroia hit a tall infield pop up that hit part of the Tropicana dome. The Umps talked it over and awarded Pedey first base... and Davis lost his focus. With Pedroia on base, he walked V-Mart and Youk, got Papi to fly out, but walked JD Drew to bring in a run. Beltre and Hermida both added RBI singles and the Sox ended up with a 4-0 lead.

The Sox never looked back.

Bottom Line: Its funny to think that a few months ago, some of us were debating whether or not Buchholz should start the 2010 season in Pawtucket. Right now, he's our ace at 6-3 with a 3.07 ERA. With Beckett in a serious funk, Buchholz' emergence has been huge.
